Bulls for 2010
Well that time of the year is now upon you all and calving will be underway by the time you are reading this.
It is also the time of year when we start receiving enthusiastic calls about elite calves born from contracts and also find out about bulls born from your other top cows. It’s amazing to think from early July to October the CRV AmBreed bull selection team will continually consider hundreds of potential super stars to build a team of elite bulls to progeny test.
There are many hurdles for them to clear before they make their way to the top and enter CRV AmBreed’s elite progeny testing program, Fast Forward.
The first and probably biggest obstacle is just being given a chance….. getting offered to CRV AmBreed. We are in no doubt each year the bobby truck gets more than its fair share of the best bulls. In so many cases we don’t know who your best cows are or what they are in-calf to, relying on you to offer us these little gems.

Contract Mating Criteria
We are often asked “What is CRV AmBreed’s contract mating criteria?”
It is fair to say these are some of the more difficult questions asked of us.
For CRV AmBreeds Genetic Development team an elite animal is not measured in BW units, but its ability to breed females with persistent performance that last and improve as they mature.
Since 1969 AmBreed has bred elite cows and bulls that produce at high levels, are easily managed in terms of calving ease, fertility and temperament, as well as having capacity and udder quality ensuring durability over multiple lactations. This enduring breeding objective remains the same and is now formally measured by New Zealand Merit Index (NZMI).

Introduction to Our Genetics Program
Genetics is the science of inheritance & variation in living organisms.
Living things inherit traits from their parents & this has been used since prehistoric times to improve animals through selective breeding.
Our Genetics program, in association with our parent company CRV Delta, is dynamic & at the forefront of genetic innovation and development globally. It encompasses the entire bull proving process from the procurement of young sires, through to semen collection, progeny test, and graduating bulls.
Our Sire Analysts procure bull calves through a variety of avenues working closely with breeder herds (contract matings) as well as purchasing bull calves through the open market. However we are always looking for new sources of bloodlines, and encourage farmers to let us know about your best cows or bull calves that may be of interest.
The Genetics Division provides an innovative advisory mating service – Total Genetic Resource Management (TGRM), available to all farmers, maximising genetic progress while managing and controlling inbreeding, trait outcomes and integration of major genes. The division also keeps farmers informed on the latest genetic developments and issues (such as Manhatten updates) with newsletters, bull articles, Fast Forward fliers, and the Genetic Edge.
With the introduction of Genomic Selection we are now able to place high selection pressure on the elite group of young sires chosen each year for inclusion in our Progeny Test Program (Fast Forward). Data from the resulting in-milk daughters entering our Fast Forward herds provides vital field validation for first-crop proofs of our new ‘graduate’ sires and New Zealand Merit Index (NZMI) calculations.
