With the use of the technology known as Genomic Selection, InSire in making big waves throughout the world with its advancements in determining an animal’s genetic make-up. This form of DNA testing identifies animal’s positive traits and helps to eliminate those that can cause breed problems in the future. By identifying the bull’s genetic make-up, the reliability of these young sires is lifted from 35% to 50-65%. As a result this reduces the time it takes to bring top proven bulls to the market from five years to two years. Further research has found that if these young bulls are then put into teams with similar positive traits, the reliably of the team increases to well over 90%, spreading the risk while taking full advantage of the specialised traits these teams offer.
Being first to the market with Genomic Selection in 2008 saw many farmers benefit from the technology. A faster rate of genetic gain sees farmers have greater access to genetics that would usually take another three years to be proven.
