How to: Rear Winning Calves

Picking your calf

 

Black calves have less hair on them than white calves.  There is less hair per square inch on a black calf which is why they lose less hair and are easier to prepare for Calf Club.

It is best to choose a calf before it is two weeks old so they can get used to you...

On Calf Club day remember to wash in your calf’s ears, give its eyes and mouth a good wipe. Make sure your halter and lead are clean – even if you have a show halter and lead and a separate training halter and lead make sure they are both clean on the day..


Leading your Calf

When teaching your calf to lead start with just haltering it and getting it used to having the halter on.  Do this when you are brushing your calf and at feeding time.  Once you find it easy to put the halter on your calf, start walking it.  Just walk in a straight line to start with, don’t worry about doing the course when you start out.  Walk up and down the race to gain the calf’s confidence and trust...
