Leading

When teaching your calf to lead start with just haltering it and getting it use to having the halter on.  Do this when you are brushing your calf and at feeding time.  Once you find it easy to put the halter on your calf start taking it for a walk.  Just walk in a straight line to start with, don’t worry about doing the course when you start out.  Walk up and down the race to get the calf’s confidence and trust.  Then take your calf into a paddock and walk it in a straight line just like what you were doing on the race. When you feel confident, start turning your calf in a big circle anti-clock wise.  Once your calf gets use to going anti-clockwise keep doing it but make the circle smaller. Once you are confident at this make the circle size the same as the circle you have to use for the course.
Practice the stop in the paddock - count out loud ‘1 2 3’ and then start again.  Your calf will get use to your voice so always tell it to ‘walk on’, ‘stop’ and ‘turn’. They can get use to commands easily also if you are consistent and calm.
Once your calf is use to what you are doing in the paddock, make up the course that is used for judging with an electric fence reel and standards.  Make sure to put 3 standards inside the pen – 3 across the back – 1 to walk around after the first straight – 1 in the middle to stop at for 3 seconds – and 1 to do your anti-clock wise turn.
Remember to walk in time with your calf and to walk at its shoulder.  You need to hold your lead correctly and this will be taught to you when you have teaching day at school.  The rules can be different from area to area so make sure you ask what they are for your area.

Things NOT to do on the Day:
