Picking Your Calf

Picking your calf

Black calves have less hair on them than white calves.  There is less hair per square inch on a black calf which is why they lose less hair and are easier to prepare for Calf Club.

It is best to choose a calf before it is two weeks old so they can get used to you, a halter and leading early.

In the Rearing Section it is important to have a clean calf that is well groomed and not shedding hair.

Tools for grooming

-You need a soft brush for the body and a firm brush for the tail.

-You will also need rubber gloves and the all important sulphur blocks that you get from the Saddlers. - Make sure you buy the sulphur blocks early as they disappear quickly.  These are wonderful for cutting the calf’s coat and removing hair.

It is better that the sulphur blocks are used by an adult or an older child.  Rubber gloves are also great to use with a little bit of water on them as this helps remove the hair especially from the legs of the calf, under the belly and in the areas where the legs meet the body as they are similar to an armpit.
