Rearing
-These areas are very important to clean, along with the udders and take a lot of work to clean because when the calf gets hot, it sheds more hair and will need extra work.
-Make sure you have a good calf coat with a silk or shiny liner in it. This is a must to keep the calf warm and help remove hair.
-If you can keep your calf inside at night, either straw or in a dry area, this will help with keeping their knee’s clean.
-Feeding your calf once a day by 3 – 4 weeks is an advantage as this will encourage them to eat more grass, hay, calf pellets and any other hard feed that calves eat. This develops the rumen and stops the calf getting too fat on milk.
If your calf scours, the hair around its bottom will literally be burnt off and leave your calf hairless in that area. If this happens please wash, wash and wash again after each scour to try and stop it loosing hair. Make sure you don't over-feed your calf on milk, especially as it gets older as this also helps stop your calf scouring.
-Another place to wash and wipe around regularly when your calf is small is it's mouth, especially if it's a messy drinker. If you don’t, the milk will stick and it can loose hair around this region.
As your calf gets older, you may need to treat your calf for lice, especially if the weather turns warm. This is best done a couple of weeks before Calf Club to ensure the lice die.
On Calf Club day

Remember to wash in your calf’s ears, give its eyes and mouth a good wipe. Make sure your halter and lead are clean – show & training ones if you have both.
If you are going to wash your calf all over, it is best to do it a couple of days before the big day as your calf needs time to get the oils back into it’s coat - so it will shine! However make sure you wash the knees of your calf on show day. This part of the calf can get very dirty. White shampoo is available from the Saddlers.
-You will need to have some knowledge about your calf for the judge.
Things like: How much it's drinking
: What it's currently eating
: Where it lives during the day and night
: When it was born.
Also tell the judge who taught it to lead. It's okay if Mum or Dad helped to start the calf off, especially if you are younger, teaching a calf to lead is hard.
Tell the judge about how you groom your calf and what you use. The more information you can tell the judge the better.
Other then that, enjoy your day and the experience. Goodluck!
