Our Breeding Philosophy

Never before have we had so many quality sires to choose from.

We are convinced this is due to the breeding process we have adhered to since we began in 1969. We believe that all New Zealand dairy farmers can benefit from the same process - resulting in real herd improvements and profit.

The process of improving your herd involves four simple steps.
1. Herd Services
2. Analyzing your herd information
3. Indexing
4. Semen selection

It all starts with Herd Services.
You should have the herd tested and recorded to make sound mating decisions.

Quite simply if you can measure it, you can manage it.
This allows you to identify the bulls you want to mate over individual cows or over your entire herd – depending on your specific breeding objectives.

New Zealand Merit Index (NZMI) will show the true genetic merit of bulls. This will help you to identify the best bulls for your mating requirements. We believe that there are strengths and weaknesses in any bull, the trick is to get the best combination for your herd.
Once you have gathered all the herd information from Herd Services, combined with the sires you have identified as possibilities, We can enter this information into breeding computer software analyzing which are the best options for mating. This can be fined tuned into specific traits that you need for your farming system.

For example, you may want to increase fertility or maybe make sure that calving runs as smoothly as possible, so select for calving ease.

Then the most exciting part; Semen Selection.
Together with your local Field Consultant, you can use your herd analysis to select a team of the most suitable bulls.

This could be based on Merit Index, specific trait or it maybe budget related.
Continuing to follow this process you can rest easy in the knowledge that year after year our bulls consistently maintain their genetic merit when they get a widespread use.
