How is SiryX Sexed Semen being produced?

The bull produces two types of semen cells – X and Y. The X cells are the female cells and sorting the cells is done with a flowcytometer. Female semen cells contain 3.8% more DNA compared with male cells and this difference is the basis of the sorting.

A fluorescent is added to the semen and in the flowcytometer this dyed semen is lit with a laser. Detectors measure the amount of fluorescence and a positive or negative charge is given to the cells. Because of the larger X-chromosome the female semen cells emit more light than the male cells which contain the smaller Y-chromosome.

Based on the charge of the cells, the semen is sorted in three flows: positively charged of one sex, negatively charged of the other sex and non-charged cells of which the sex can’t be determined. This procedure sorts the semen in the two sexes with 90 percent purity.

Is Sexed Semen available in New Zealand?

There is only one proven semen sorting technique in the world at this moment, developed by Sexing Technologies in the US. CRV, our parent company, was the first breeding company to open a semen sexing facility outside the US. Currently CRV operates two semen sexing facilities: in Brazil and The Netherlands. A third one, in the Czech Republic, is under construction.

Since 2007 we have supplied sexed semen from Dutch bulls. This semen is highly sought after worldwide and therefore very expensive for New Zealand standards. Although still a small segment, we dominate this market.
To further strengthen its position, we are now the only breeding company that can offer sex sorted semen from bulls of New Zealand origin.

Why is there not a semen sorting lab in New Zealand?

Sexed semen has become extremely popular among dairy farmers around the world. Worldwide dairy commodity prices are high and stock prices continue to climb. The owner of the sorting technology can only start so many new labs and has chosen to aim for the large dairying areas like the US and Europe. However, we are in discussion to start a lab here in New Zealand.

The demand for SiryX Sexed Semen is such that we decided if we couldn’t get a lab built in New Zealand in time for this season, we would bring the bulls to the machines. That is the reason we transported four proven bulls to the United States for semen production. We can add another New Zealand first to its list of progressive herd improvement
