AmBreed backs a winner

AmBreed backs a winner!

4/12/2007
AmBreed is proud to have sponsored the Culverden dairy farmer who won the Paris to Dakar Cycle Race (7200kms)

The second edition of this unique adventure started Sunday September 9th, 2007 at the base of the Eiffel Tower. All cyclists left Paris with the ambition to complete the 7200km journey to Dakar. Among those competing this epic adventure was John Faulkner, 51, a dairy farmer from Culverden in the North of Canterbury.

The race quickly came down to a two-man contest: Bicycle Bob vs the Kiwi. The Kiwi was John, but Bicycle Bob? That's 18-year-old Bob Martens, from the Netherlands, entering the race with the expectation that it was his. He had written his competition off as being “too old.” He even told them so during John's 51st birthday party in Fes, Morocco. The next day, on one of the race's hardest and longest stages – a 179km stretch with some 2200m of climbing into a 15 to 20 knot headwind, John buried everyone.

Whilst winning such an adventure is quite remarkable what makes it even more remarkable is a couple of years ago John was diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Taking medication for a year, Robyn described it as “a hell mission."

"For John to win the race is amazing," Robyn says. "He deserves it."

AmBreed’s sponsorship will go towards the SOS children’s village and the Right to Play. Congratulations John from the Team at AmBreed – Just like AmBreed Bulls, you have shown to be reliable, rock solid and can go the distance!
