Building superior herdsAmBreed - Building Superior Herds!26/09/2007 It is an interesting dilemma which has drawn a familiar response from the dairy and political powers that be: on the one hand Fonterra pay-out is forecast to be at least $6.40 bringing a windfall to all New Zealanders, while on the other hand the sceptics are worried how farmers will spend the extra money. The Government is concerned about the economic impact and several commentators are warning not to increase the fixed costs of farming by going high input. A very paternalistic attitude, reinforcing the message that farmers can’t make their own decisions. At AmBreed we believe that farmers can make their own decisions and are very capable of tailoring their management system to fit their own needs. We encourage our clients to consider all the options to maximize their breeding plan outcomes. Discussion focuses on the level of inputs; inputs are irrelevant. What is relevant is to best capture the high payout by high farm OUTPUT. It is not important what the input is, as long as the output is profitable and optimized. For example; shifting from Once A Day milking to twice a day, or improving heifer rearing will improve output without radically changing input. In all cases the basics need to be right: the first basic is a herd of high genetic merit. A quality herd to optimize profit is needed in any input system and pay-out level. Investing in the right bulls has a huge return. AmBreed has the bulls available to breed superior herds with long lasting cattle and high lifetime performance under a variety of systems. AmBreed cattle are bred for high protein production with better than average protein:fat ratio in milk solids and that will also bear fruit under current protein-fueled record milk payments. It is generally accepted that AmBreed sired herds are able to handle higher outputs. This is often reflected in premium prices for stock. The NZMI breeding goal developed by AmBreed is more and more recognized as the way to go forward when farmers want to achieve a better performing, long-life herd in a variety of farming systems.
